Applicants interested in restricted majors are encouraged to apply earlier than the posted deadline. Applications received after these dates will be reviewed on a space-available basis. Stony Brook accepts transfer students for both Fall and Spring semesters.

Transfer credits can fulfill many Stony Brook Curriculum (SBC) requirements, including math, science, foreign language, social sciences, humanities, and arts. Each course is reviewed individually by Transfer Services to determine SBC applicability. However, WRT 102 (writing requirement) can only be satisfied with courses completed before matriculation—writing courses taken elsewhere after enrolling at Stony Brook will not transfer.
Stony Brook does not offer rolling admissions for transfer students. Applications are reviewed on a deadline basis, with a Fall admission deadline of May 1 and a Spring deadline of November 1.
The university has Joint Admissions Programs with several community colleges across New York State. This is a pathway program designed for students who graduate with an Associate's degree and meet all requirements outlined in the agreement. Submit official transcripts from all colleges attended by August 15 (Fall) or January 15 (Spring). Stony Brook accepts up to 84 transfer credits—courses with grades of C or higher from regionally accredited institutions are evaluated for credit.
